Our Story
Having previously worked as both funeral director and manager of two earlier established funeral homes in Richmond, Walter J. Manning, at age thirty-eight, founded Walter J. Manning Funeral Home in February of 1941. The original building located at 1120 N. 27th Street served as both a place of business on the first floor, and as a family residence on the second floor.
Upon the death of Walter J. Manning in 1953, ownership of the funeral home passed to his wife, Rosena P. Manning. The oldest son, Walter W. Manning, Sr., a licensed funeral director, became the manager of the business. Mrs. Anna Manning White, a daughter, served as secretary. Over the next ten years, the younger brothers, Ramon, Andrew, and Ira joined the family business.
In 1966, the firm moved to its present site at 700 N. 25th Street in Richmond, VA. The move made it possible for the company to offer a more spacious facility and additional services to clients. Our goal has always been to provide professional service with the highest integrity and the utmost dignity for the deceased.
In October 2013, the firm began trading under the name, Manning Funeral and Cremation Services. This name is a reflection of the changing practices in the funeral industry.
Today, the firm is owned by the founder's last surviving son, Ira O. Manning, II and his sons, Ira O. Manning, III and A. Mitchell Manning.
