Walter "Bruh"
Brown
d. Nov 14, 2025
Walter Douglas Brown, lovingly called "Bruh," was born on October 31, 1949, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Charles Lemuel and Lila Mae Brooks Brown. He grew up surrounded by love, laughter, and a strong sense of community in Church Hill, at 24th and Clay Streets.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Charles Jones; his sisters, Ruth Williams and Rosa Lee Harris; his sisters-in-law, Julia Jones and Betty Brown; his nieces, Juanita Williams, and Ruth Anne Walker; and his nephew, Clinton Williams, Jr.
Throughout his life, Walter was known for his lively spirit and playful banter. He loved to "talk trash" and always had something to say—whether asking for a dollar, some change, where you were headed, or requesting his favorites: a diet soda, fried chicken, and a tossed salad. He was very particular about what he wanted, and he made sure everyone knew it.
In his younger years, Walter found joy in attending gospel concerts. Some of his favorite groups included the Violinaires, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, and many others. When these groups visited Richmond, they grew accustomed to seeing Walter in the audience, and if he wasn't there, they would check on him. He was often spotted walking from the bus stop, singing and bopping his head from side to side. God blessed Walter with a beautiful voice, and he used it to share his love of music wherever he went.
Walter was a member of New Elam Baptist Church and frequently attended Cedar Street Memorial Baptist Church. If there was a concert or good singing, you could count on Bruh to be there.
Above all, Walter cherished his family. He is survived by his brothers, Lemuel "Baby Lem" Brown and Rev. Russell Brown; his sister-in-law, Alice Walker Brown; two aunts; Ida Brown and Mary Simon, a host of beloved nieces and nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He is also fondly remembered by his dear friend David Shaw, and the staff at the Envoy Rehabilitation Center, and countless loved ones.
