Obituary

Theodore "Ted" Quentin Mills was born on March 7, 1953, to Theodore and Margaret Ann Cyrus Mills in New Rochelle, New York. He was the youngest and the only boy of three children. When he was a teenager, he migrated with his family to Charleston, West Virginia. He attended Charleston Catholic High school where he developed his athletic abilities in basketball, which led him to receive a full scholarship to Wesleyan College in Charleston, WV.

Ted later completed his undergraduate studies at West Virginia State University. However, his path wasn't completely straight. He took a short U-turn to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, the city where he met the love of his life, Alice Townes, whom he married in less than a year since they began dating. Newly wedded, they moved back to Charleston, West Virginia where Ted earned his bachelor's degree in Sociology in 1979.

Ted and Alice settled in Richmond, VA. Ted started his career in social justice as a social worker for the city of Richmond where he worked for several years. He later started his own contractor company where he did everything from designing and building structures to crafting things (he even transformed his home porch into a bedroom!).

Alongside his athletic abilities and craftsmanship were his musical abilities. Taught by his mom at an early age, Ted learned how to play the piano which he mastered over the years. He composed, wrote and produced original songs over his lifetime and recently visited the music capital of the country, Nashville to further expand his professional music endeavors One of his most notable songs is called Holy Spirit (its lyrics are on the back of the program). Music was not just a gift of Ted's, but it was his therapy. Wherever Ted was, music was. He was always with paper and pen, writing and refining music. In addition to music, Ted loved to read, write, play chess and basketball, and enjoyed fishing. In his later years, he started a street ministry where he ministered to the homeless and mentally ill communities.

Ted departed his earthly life on Sunday, March 5, 2023, and was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Marget Ann Mills, and his eldest sister, Nikola Richardson- Mills.

Ted leaves to cherish in his memory his wife: Alice Mills, children: Christine O'Neil, Theodore D. Mills, Joanna Mills, Monica Mills and Alicia Mills, sister: Alison Newman- Mills, sisters-in-law: Mary Brown and Ernestine Townes, son-in-law: Willie O'Neil, grandchildren: Divine Mills, Sydney O'Neil, Craig Anderson, Janiyah Childs, Jaliek Leonard, Camira Leonard and Faith Leonard and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
