Sherman L.
Howard
d. Jun 16, 2024
Sherman L. Howard, affectionately known as "Tap," peacefully passed away on June 16, 2024, finding solace in God's embrace. He was born on May 1, 1950, to the late Ollie Howard and Laura H. Ross. Sherman grew up in Richmond, Virginia, where he gained respected status as a meticulous historian in this family. He loved "history."
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Laura M. Young, two sisters, Eloise H. Culpepper and Iretta H. Sutton; three brothers, Therman, Ollie Jr., and Richard Howard; and one niece, Brenda Howard.
Sherman's life journey included graduating from Maggie L. Walker High School and serving honorably in the US Air Force. He later pursued a career he loved deeply: chauffeuring and driving limousines across Richmond and Northern Virginia. His caring nature extended to adults with serious mental illness at his late mother's adult home, where he dedicated himself with compassion.
Tap was known for his infectious smile and love of westerns, jeopardy, and sports. Sherman brought joy with his teasing humor. He had a vibrant spirit, always eager to dance to the original "Electric Slide" when music played. His resilience and wit were matched only by his deep compassion for family and friends. Tap loved the Dallas Cowboys.
Sherman is survived by his son Sherman Sr., (Monica) and four beloved grandsons, Donellwyatt, Sherman Jr., Jymir, and Damarius Young, four nieces, Deborah (Garvey), Wanda, Sabrina, and Sonya, and five nephews, Donald, Kelvin, Craig, Louis (Heather), and Keith (Gail). Keith stands out for his daily support and unwavering presence. Sherman's extended family includes three aunts, Truicinda Barnes, Eula Godwin and Cora Sneed, and a wide circle of family and friends, including Amos Barnes and Lorna Stevens.
In remembering Sherman L. "Tap" Howard, his family and friends honor a man whose laughter and warmth touched countless lives, leaving behind a legacy of joy and cherished memories that will endure forever.
