Rosie G.
Brown
d. Dec 17, 2025
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it." — John 1:5
Rosie Gloria Brown, lovingly known as "Rosie" and to her family as "Gloria," age 87, of Midlothian, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. Born on October 18, 1938, in New York, New York, she was the beloved daughter of the late Willie Taylor and Queenie Couterier Taylor.
Rosie was educated in the Richmond Public School system, attending Navy Hill Elementary School, George Mason, Armstrong High School, and later J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Her life reflected diligence, resilience, and quiet strength—qualities she carried into every role she embraced.
Rosie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alonzo Brown. On November 17, 1956, she married the love of her life, beginning a devoted partnership grounded in faith, perseverance, and shared purpose. Together, they built a life centered on family, service, and community.
Rosie worked faithfully for many years, including as an assistant butcher in the meat departments of Edwards Grocery and A&P Grocery Stores, where she was known for her strong work ethic and warm, steady presence.
A woman deeply committed to service and fellowship, Rosie was an active member of The Order of the Eastern Star (OES), an organization dedicated to charity, truth, and loving kindness, where moral lessons are taught through sacred ritual and shared purpose.
Her faith life was anchored at Cedar Street Baptist Church, where she served faithfully for more than six decades. Rosie devoted her gifts in countless ways, including membership in the Senior Choir, R. M. Wilson Choir, and Mass Choir. She also served as a member of the Royal Ushers and as Business Manager of the Butler Ushers, faithfully supporting the congregation and bringing members together through activities, tours, and communion—creating cherished memories from trips to Florida, Pennsylvania, Disney, and beyond. Her presence was constant, her voice faithful, and her spirit nurturing.
In addition to her church service, Rosie was a long-standing and devoted volunteer with the Johnston-Willis Hospital program, where she served as an integral source of comfort and support to patients and visitors for over 30 years.
Above all, Rosie was a beloved woman of Christ who remained deeply grounded in spirit throughout her life. That grounding was felt in how she made others feel—through a perfectly timed word of encouragement, a calming presence in moments of conflict, and a gentle strength that brought love into places marked by hopelessness and despair.
She carried a deep sense of personal connection into every act of service, living out Christ's call to treat others not as separate, but as one—drawing all she touched into belonging, fellowship, and the oneness Christ modeled. Through her many roles at Cedar Street Baptist Church and her lifelong service in the Order of the Eastern Star, Rosie helped sustain the living flow of God's love. In trying times especially, she stood as a steady light for her generation and the next—offering not only guidance and restoration, but an enduring example of a life rooted in Christ that continues to illuminate the path for those who follow.
