Mary L.
Johnson
d. Jan 28, 2026
Mary Louise Johnson of Henrico, VA (formerly of 3012 4th Avenue, Richmond, VA), departed this life peacefully at the age of 88, on January 28, 2026. She was born to the late Walter Little and Annie Lee Little. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, James Hallie Johnson and beloved daughter, Sabrina Yvette Johnson.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory, one loving daughter, Youlander G. Johnson; one stepson, James H. Johnson, Jr.; two stepdaughters, Vernita Mitchell and Diane Cox; one devoted sister, Helen D. Williams; one sister in law, Geraldine Johnson; one brother in law, Clifford Johnson; four loving granddaughters, LaKisha Johnson (devoted caretaker), Shalonda Barlowe (Robert), Meyoka Johnson, and Jamie Gayle; two grandsons, Ronald Johnson and JaMondre Johnson; eleven great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren (two on the way); a host of nieces, two devoted, Pamela Pegeas and Octavia Gaston; a host of nephews, two devoted, Ricky Jackson and Anthony Gaston; a host of devoted cousins, other loving relatives, and dear friends (Lavinia Washington).
Mary Louise was a graduate of Maggie L. Walker High School, (formerly one of the only two) which opened in 1938 as an all-black segregated public school. She was a great student as her academic performance, maturity, and adaptation to learning new information led her to a promising career in nursing.
Mary Louise, was a faithful and dedicated member of 7th Street Memorial Baptist Church of Richmond, where she served diligently along side her husband, The Late Hallie J. Johnson, Jr. (her forever love, till death separated them). She continued on serving many years until her health declined. Her life was a reflection of great strength, unwavering faith, and deep devotion to family. She was one of the first black trusted nurses of M.C.V. Hospital serving in the Cardiac Trauma Unit shortly after graduating nursing school for many years until her retirement as a R.N.
To know 'Louise' was to know her likes (to go for a scenic ride or sit on the front porch to view the scenes first hand), her dislikes (a long phone conversation), her loves (music, dancing, dressing and a classy hairstyle), her passion for television (morning, noon or night) and games (of her favorite tv shows and/or board games), and her favorite beverages (coffee, Pepsi or fruit punch).
In closing, it is realized with a heart of gratitude that MY mother Louise, OUR Grandmother, Cousin, Friend and so much more, has written HER-story for over 88 years and the message WE want to convey is to LOVE the family you're born into (for and through life) for whatever the issues of life are, WE come together as ONE, for FAMILY truly matters more than YOU know. Thank YOU, OUR great wise counselor and OUR amazing ancestors that paved the way for greatness within US all. WE LOVE the family WE were born into, deeply and WE honor OUR amazing as WE continue to strive for UNITY for the loss of the maternal matriarch for her generation has left a crimson stain … moreover, call to REconnect for some as it should force others to pivot to a better INNER standing of what family truly means before this next generation is loss to a SOULless journey through this dimension of life. May OUR Mary Louise truly rest in eternal peace. A humble SOUL gone, but never forgotten.
