Jasper R.
Watkins Jr.
d. Apr 22, 2024
Jasper Robert Watkins Jr., affectionately known as Bob was born on August 18, 1935, in Lacrosse, Arkansas, to the proud parents of Jasper and Lena Watkins. Bob was the youngest of six children, preceded in death by his siblings Olen, Vernon, Richard, Virgie, and Thelma.
Bob's journey began in Peoria, Illinois, where he attended Peoria Central High School. It was here that his extraordinary musical talent began to blossom. Despite his father's aspirations for him to pursue a career in medicine, Bob's passion for music was undeniable. He enchanted audiences with his mesmerizing performances, earning accolades and admiration wherever he played.
In pursuit of his musical dreams, Bob joined the Army, where he continued to share his gift with the world as a member of the 298th Army band. His time in the service allowed him to travel and perform across the country, honing his craft and further solidifying his reputation as a gifted musician.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Bob settled in Los Angeles, California, in 1970. He attended Sayer Business College and received his Bachelor of Arts in Business, where he embarked on various business adventures as an accountant. Additionally, he served as a counselor for a federally funded program supporting underserved youth. He found fulfillment and purpose working at the Federal Government, where he eventually retired, all while continuing to pursue his passion for music. His talent and dedication were evident in every note he played, and he soon became a respected figure in the local music scene.
Bob found true love when he met Bertha Marie Watkins (Johnson). Their love story was one of devotion and companionship, and they were united in marriage and shared 29 years of a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories-a testament to the enduring power of their bond.
Bob cherished his family above all else. His legacy resides in his daughter, Dr. Monica Caffey (Cliff Deon) and granddaughter, Rakiyah whom he was immensely proud of. Bob's pride knew no bounds when it came to family and the importance in bringing family together. He held a special bond with his nephews, David (Lorraine), Philip, Frederick, Leon, Richard, Jr.; nieces, Paula, Yvonne, and Delvera; sisters-in-law, Ruth Bullock (James) and Pearl Brooks; brothers-in-law (deceased). William, Benny and Richard; along with Goddaughter, Dr. Connie Moreland; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was a pillar of strength and support for his family, always there to lend a listening ear or offer words of wisdom.
Above all else, Bob was a devoted Christian who found solace and strength in his faith. He was a proud member of Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church, Peoria, Illinois. His unwavering devotion to God shaped his values, beliefs, and actions, inspiring those around him to live lives of love, compassion, and service to others.
As we remember Jasper Robert Watkins (Bob), let us take comfort in the knowledge that he is now resting in the arms of his Savior, surrounded by the everlasting love and peace of the Lord. May his faith continue to shine brightly as a testament to the power of God's redeeming love.
Bob will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing that he was loved beyond measure and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
