Hazel R. Lewis

Hazel was one of three daughters born August 11, 1933 to the late Walter and Octavia Green, alongside their beloved son. She was preceded in death by her brother, Eddie Green; sisters, Lena Thompson and Montinello Glasgow; beloved daughter, Montarea Washington; her cherished granddaughter, Nicole Henley; and her son-in-law, William Abrams.

With hearts filled with love and gratitude, we celebrate the beautiful life of Hazel Rebecca Green-Lewis, affectionately known by many as Ms. Bea, Kitty, and Grandma Bee.

In August of 1955, Hazel married the love of her life, John Henry Lewis, beginning a union built on love, commitment, and faith. Together they created a home where family always came first. Hazel was the rock of her family—a steady pillar of strength, wisdom, compassion, and encouragement. She possessed a quiet resilience that carried those around her through life’s greatest joys and deepest sorrows.

Hazel faithfully cared for her husband until his passing in 2003 and lovingly devoted herself to her daughter until her passing in 2004. Even through profound loss, she remained steadfast in her faith and continued to pour herself into the lives of those God had entrusted to her.

To know Hazel was to know genuine kindness, gentle strength, and unconditional love. Her family depended on her wisdom, her comforting presence, and her nurturing spirit. She was admired, honored, and deeply respected—not only for the remarkable woman she was, but also for the values she instilled in those she raised. She exemplified the true meaning of motherhood, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to live on through every life she touched.

Hazel’s faith was the foundation of her life. She was a proud and faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church in Varina and had been a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church since her early childhood. Worship brought her great joy, and she found comfort and peace in her favorite hymns, Amazing Grace, Glory Is His Name, and Lead Me, Guide Me. She also held close to her heart The Seven Last Sayings of Christ, drawing strength and inspiration from the scriptures found in Luke 23:34 & 43, John 19:26–27, Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34, John 19:28 & 30, and Luke 23:46.

She leaves to cherish her memories: sons, Johnnie Lewis (Barbara) and Michael Lewis (Wanda); daughter, Patricia Lewis-Abrams; grand-children, Carlos Lewis (Monique), Marcus Lewis (Rauiesha Lewis), Dana Washington, Shauntele Abrams, Kevin Lewis, Monica Washington, Tyanna Abrams; great grandchildren, Tymesha Prentiss, Jerrell Lewis, Porchea Lewis, Jordon Prentiss, Dominique Lewis, Tyra Wade, Anaiya Smalls, Mariah Lewis, Makayla Lewis, Deandra Lewis, Keshaun Lewis, Zaylen Abrams-Dennis, Jurni Goodwin, Kennadi Abrams-Dennis, Londyn Noble, and Mason Abrams-Dennis; a host of other relatives and dear friends.
