George Ephram Whitfield, Jr. was born on February 17, 1943, in Halifax County, North Carolina, to the late Tempie and Ephram Whitfield. He peacefully departed this life on May 19, 2026.
George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ernestine Virginia Grant Whitfield; his sister, Annie-Carol; and his brother, Sidney Whitfield.
George received his education in North Carolina, where he met the love of his life, Ernestine, affectionately known as “Tine.” The two were united in marriage and, in the early 1960s, relocated to Richmond, Virginia, where they built a life together and raised their family.
A dedicated and hardworking man, George was employed by the City of Richmond for more than 20 years before retiring after years of faithful service.
George found great joy in spending time with family and friends. He was known for preparing delicious Sunday dinners and cherished every opportunity to bring loved ones together around the table. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, playing pool, and baseball, where he was especially known for his fast left-handed pitch. He also had a passion for working on cars and staying busy with projects. Above all, George was a devoted family man who worked tirelessly to provide for those he loved.
He leaves to cherish his memory two loving sons, Warren Whitfield and Wayne Whitfield (Vanita Whitfield); two grand-daughters, Kennedy (Pat) and Laquida; two grandsons, Allen Whitfield and Jarrelle (Cierra Smith); one great-granddaughter; and his special friend, Tracy Reed. He is also survived by his brother, Floyd Whitfield; sisters, Mary, Emma, and Val Whitfield; his favorite niece, Boogie; his favorite nephew, Coolay; their mother, Martha; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
George will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering devotion to family, strong faith, and the kindness and love he shared with all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know and love him.
