Obituary

George Edwin Meeks, Sr., departed this life on Good Friday, March 29, 2024. He remained in the home throughout his illness and transition, fulfilling a promise made by his devoted wife to be there with him until the very end!

George was born on April 5, 1945, in Roanoke, Virginia to Al Charles Meeks Sr. and Elizabeth Gladys Ross Meeks, who preceded him in demise. He was the youngest of three children, raised with his two siblings, Roberta Mae Brown and Al Charles Meeks Jr., who also predeceased him.

George, affectionately known as "Buck," enjoyed early years with his close-knit family and community. He attended Jerusalem Baptist Church, where he was baptized at an early age.

George attended Roanoke City Schools and graduated from Lucy Addison High School in 1964. After graduation, George entered the United States Army and served his country honorably.

George was a valued employee for many organizations for whom he worked, including Norfolk & Western Railroad, Phillip Morris Tobacco Company, and Ruffin & Payne Inc. Lumber Store, from which he retired. He loved to work and was very dedicated, rarely missing a day. He even continued working part-time after his retirement at Chimborazo Market.

George enjoyed sports, especially football (he was a long-time Dallas Cowboys fan), basketball, baseball, and NASCAR Racing. George was very comical and fun-loving. While he could be the life of the party, he was a homebody at heart who loved eating home-cooked meals and sitting on his front porch socializing with family, friends, and neighbors.

Those left to cherish George's memory are his wife and partner of over 46 years, Carolyn Meeks; two children, George E. Meeks Jr., and Vickie Meeks Miller (James) of Roanoke, VA; two step-children, Darryl Epps (Chatay) of Norfolk, VA, and Sherry Jones (and his buddy and son-in-law, Jeff) of Goldsboro, NC; a host of grandchildren, including three of whom he and Carolyn reared, a host of great-grandchildren, including his "Dude" Latif of the Richmond, VA, home who they also raised, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends, including devoted friend Bobby Davis, and his adored fur babies, Lady and Toby.

George made many friends throughout his lifetime and was certainly loved. He and his big smile will be greatly missed!
