Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Elsie Elizabeth Mosley, age 83, of Richmond, VA, who passed away peacefully on March 22, 2025, at Heritage Hall in Blackstone, Virginia.

Elsie was born on January 17, 1942, in Bracey, VA to James W. and Mattie Boyd Thomas, who preceded her in death, Elsie grew up in Mecklenburg County and attended public schools in the area.

In her early years, Elsie worked tirelessly on her family's farm, harvesting cotton and tobacco while caring for cattle, chickens, and pigs.  She later married Drewry Harris and raised three children in their family home.  Following their separation, Elsie courageously moved to Richmond to begin a new chapter as a single mother guided by the support of her brothers. Eventually, she found love again and married her second husband, George Austin, who also proceeded her in death. Elsie was deeply devoted to her faith and was a cherished member of First Baptist Church in South Richmond.  Known for her vibrant personality, she was outspoken, feisty, and stubborn, qualities that endeared her to those around her.  She possessed many talents, including cooking, sewing, tailoring, and entertaining.  Her love for dancing and hosting lively parties brought joy to many.

Elsie is survived by her beloved daughters: Margaret Ann Chappelle (Gregory), Elsie Mae Harris, Diane Elizabeth Harris. She was preceded in death by her daughter Virginia Dinah Megahed.  Her legacy lives on through her seven grandchildren, Shante Piggot (Raymond), Shamae Harris, LaChrissha, LaMeissha, and LaTifah Harris (Wood); Waynita Austin; and Vinaesha Clack (Fendi). She was a proud great-grandmother to ten grandchildren, including Makenzie Piggot, LaMrej Harris, Ciron Harris, NiYana Berry, Teriq and Tereah Mitchell, LaTiyah, Maliyah, Linwood Roster, and Amyrah Hawkins.

Elsie's extended family includes nephews, Charlie Thomas, Jr. (Sonya), Jessie, George A., George L., and Gregory Thomas; nieces Jean Leonard, Faye Davis, Tracey Austin, and Bernice; cousin, Ben Albert Butcher; as well as a host of other relatives and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
