Doris Elizabeth Smith Morton peacefully transitioned from this world on March 27, 2025, after a long, fulfilling life. Her memorial service will be held on April 26, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Walter J. Manning Funeral Home Chapel, 700 North 25th Street, Richmond, Virginia 23223.

Doris, the first of two children, was born to Alease Elizabeth Brown Smith and Gasseno Irving Smith on July 26, 1936. After losing her mother at the age of eight, Doris was raised by her grandmother, Sarah Liggon Brown. Her aunts, Edith (Sis) Brown and Estelle (Cooey) Bates, and her dear neighbors Louis and Leatta Robinson, also played a vital role in raising her during her childhood and young adult years.
Doris is preceded in death by many beloved family members and friends, including her mother and father, her sister Delores Ann Smith who passed before her second birthday, her grandmother, her best friend Bertha Jackson, and her beloved husband of almost 62 years, Aubrey Stewart Morton, Jr.
Doris leaves behind a growing legacy, which includes her two sons, Michael Morton and Breydon Morton (Kim); four grandchildren, Demetrio Preston – who she considers a third son, Lauren Morton, Brandon Morton (Amber), and Kimberly Morton; three great-grandchildren, Anton Preston (Tyra), DeMya Preston, and Arie Morton; three great-great-grandchildren, Johnny Preston, RosaMae Preston, and André Preston; five sisters-in-law, Joan Brunson, Carol Harris (Carlton), Joyce Miles, Sandra Chavis (Alan), and Patricia Ellis; several maternal cousins including Stanley Brown (Zelma), Falisha Gaines (Walter), Willie Bland, Jr.; and a host of other cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Among the friends devoted – Ethel Jackson and Janice Curtis.
Doris Morton's life was one of beauty, joy, and steadfast love for those she held dear. She touched the hearts of many and will be remembered as a woman who lived with a deep sense of purpose and found joy in the simple moments of life. Though she is no longer with us, her love, spirit, and grace will continue to inspire all who knew her.
