DARNELL TOLLIVER COLES was born on September 6, 1952, in Page, West Virginia, to the late Benjamin Jr. and Cathleen Coles. He was the fourth of seven children and was raised with the love and support of his family.
Darnell was a proud graduate of Montgomery High School in Montgomery, West Virginia, where he completed his studies in 1970. Following high school, he worked for several years in the coal mines, becoming part of the hardworking tradition that shaped so many lives in his community.
Later, Darnell relocated to Richmond, Virginia, where he continued his career as a skilled bricklayer. He worked alongside his older brother through Coles Construction Company, dedicating himself to his craft and taking pride in the work of his hands.
In January 2019, Darnell became a resident of Forest Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Virginia, where he received care and rehabilitation following several strokes. During his years there, he was surrounded by caregivers and others who supported him throughout his journey. Darnell was preceded in death by his brothers, DeNard and Dexter; and his sisters, Elaine and Valerie. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved son, Dheo; his adored grandson, Dherion; his caring sisters, Yvette Coles and Samona Reynolds; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. The Lord called Darnell home on August 8, 2026. His life touched the hearts of many through the steadfast way he showed up in both good times and difficult times. His generous heart, sense of humor, and way of life will be dearly missed.
Darnell will be remembered for his strength, perseverance, hardworking spirit, and the mark he left on the lives of those who knew and loved him. His life reflected the values of family, determination, and resilience.
