Obituary

Charles Theodore Winston, Sr., joined his heavenly father, September 23, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was the first child, born August 11, 1936, to the late Major and Bertha Inez Winston in Richmond, Virginia.

He accepted Christ at an early age; was baptized and became a member of Cedar Street Memorial Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. Later he was ordained a Deacon and member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Ruffin, North Carolina until his passing. Charles attended Richmond Public Schools and graduated from Armstrong High School.  He was employed and retired after 36 years from American Tobacco Company/ RJ Reynolds. He was also employed by Virginia Union University for more than 10 years.  He was a certified construction concrete/foundation man and assisted in the construction of many new homes in Windsor Farms and Brandermill areas.

In 1959 he married Bettie Christian Ross Winston and became the proud parents of five children: Teresa, Gail, Charles Jr. (Chuck), Keith and Ron.  His job with American Tobacco relocated him to North Caroline where he later married Naomi Mills.

Charles was active in church and stressed the importance of getting an education to his children. He loved western- Clint Eastwood movies, gospel and rhythm and blues music, specifically Muddy Waters.

Charles was preceded in death, by his parents; his wives; Bettie Christian Winston and Naomi Mills Winston, his grandson; Keiron Cheyenne Winston, three brothers; Victor Lee Winston, and Joseph Winston both of New York City, NY, Earl Hankins of Richmond, Virginia and one sister: Earnestine Terrell aka (Earnestine Ester Breedlove) of Richmond, Virginia.

He is survived by his children, Dr. B. Teresa Winston-Hunter (Grady Hunter) of Kansas City, MO, Gail A. Winston of Louisville, KY, Charles T. Winston, Jr. (Ann Spivey) of Henrico, VA, Keith L. Winston (Leslie) of New Kent, VA and Ron T. Winston of Henrico, VA;  one brother, James T. Winston of Richmond, VA;  step-daughter, Robin Mills and stepson, David (Pumpkin) Mills, both of Ruffin, NC; three grandsons, Damien Winston, Thomas Martin White III and Demond Spivey (Misty), all of Richmond VA; two granddaughters, Lisa Dolphin (Tony), of Belton, MO, and Angelis Hunter, of Washington DC.; nine great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Emma Cotman, of Henrico, VA, and Sarah Christian of Williamsburg, VA; a host of devoted nieces and nephews, one devoted great-nephew, James Jefferson Jr.; other relatives and friends.
