Charles "Black"
Alexander
d. Dec 4, 2025
It is with deep love and fond memories that we celebrate the life of Charles "Black" Alexander, who passed away on December 4, 2025, in Richmond, VA, at the age of 82. Born on May 30, 1943, in Palmer Springs, VA, Charles was the beloved son of Willie Lee Alexander and Mary Frances Alexander, both of whom preceded him in death.
Known to many as "Black," Charles was the life of the party—full of humor, quick wit, and laughter. A self-described "black sheep" among his siblings, he embraced his fun-loving nature. While he loved to joke and trash talk, he also had a heart full of quiet generosity, often helping family and friends without seeking recognition.
Charles grew up in Palmer Springs and later moved to Richmond in 1957. He attended Cotton Creek Elementary, Wise Elementary, and Armstrong High School. During his service in the U.S. Army, which included a year in Vietnam, Charles earned his GED and later pursued higher education at Virginia Union University. There, he graduated in 1973 with a degree in Accounting, was a proud member of Groove Phi Groove fraternity, and built lifelong friendships.
His career took him from the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., to auditing for the State of Virginia, and finally to the Medical College of Virginia before retirement. Beyond professional achievements, his heart belonged to his family. He married the love of his life who preceded him in death, Florence Elizabeth Alexander, on September 3, 1973. Together, they built a committed and loving life, raising their children, Charles Bryan Alexander and Aaron Sorrell Alexander (Tajie). He adored his grandchildren: Sorrell Brya Alexander, Harlyn Flo Alexander, Nixon Sam Alexander, and Gunnar Samuel Alexander.
Charles was a devoted brother to James Kersey (deceased), Al Alexander (Bettie), Lillie Jackson (deceased), Robert Alexander, Roslyn Johnson (Jerome), and Patsy Moore (deceased). His extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins held a special place in his heart.
He cherished family gatherings, lively conversations filled with shared memories, and the boundless energy of his grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy. Despite his outgoing nature, Charles found solace in simple moments, reading the newspaper daily, staying informed on current events, and supporting loved ones from the background.
A memorial luncheon to celebrate Charles's remarkable life will be held on Friday, January 16th at 2:00 PM at Belmont Golf Club. The dress code is relaxed—just like Black would've wanted. Come as you are to enjoy good food, music, and fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in honor of Charles Alexander to Virginia Union University.
We will miss his laughter, his stories, and his unwavering love. Rest well, Charles "Black" Alexander. Your legacy of joy, kindness, and family will live on in all of us.
