Beverly Ann
West
d. Dec 14, 2025
Beverly Ann West was born on October 6, 1961, in Richmond, Virginia, a true blessing for her parents, the late Reverend George Nelson West and the late Marjorie Battle West. Raised on the Northside of Richmond, Beverly grew up surrounded by a loving community of extended family and friends.
As a child, she was nurtured and prepared for greatness by the First African Baptist Church Day Nursery, Richmond Public Schools, Good Shepherd Baptist Church, and a cocoon of neighbors on Edgewood Ave. Beverly graduated from Marshall-Walker High School, where she was not only a strong student but also a marching band majorette and sang tenor in the school choir. Even then, Beverly had presence. She was disciplined but warm, confident but friendly—someone people noticed and remembered.
After high school, Beverly followed in her father's footsteps, to his beloved "home by the sea," Hampton University (HU) in Hampton, VA. Founded in 1868 to educate formerly enslaved people, Hampton University has long been a cornerstone of Black excellence, leadership, and service. That legacy fit Beverly perfectly. As a Hampton Pirate, she sang in the choir, performed as a band majorette, was active with the Sigma Doves, and immersed herself in campus life and social justice activities. Her Hamptonian classmates relay that Beverly was known for her classy style in college. She always wore pearls. At Hampton, as a political science major, she was inspired to create a better world through active engagement in politics and advocacy. She loved Hampton University; sang the praises of HU whenever she had a chance; and spent her last days wearing a comforting blue and white Hampton University hat.
After graduating from Hampton University, Beverly headed north to Washington, D.C., where she lived and worked all her adult life. Her career included working as a travel agent, in the insurance profession, as an assistant for the pioneering Black female attorney Mabel Hayden, and an avid supporter of the work of the Congressional Black Caucus. Beverly was intelligent, well-read, and deeply knowledgeable; she followed current events closely and could hold her own in any political conversation. She remained sharp, informed, and opinionated regarding current events up until last week.
Beverly was especially close to her father, whom she affectionately called "Daddio." She leaned in and supported him after the death of Marjorie and as he cared for his elderly mother. Beverly was his heart. She was happy for him when he found love again and remarried in 1987. She gained a bonus 'mommy' and two brothers.
She was naturally friendly and brought people together, creating family wherever she went. Bloodlines never limited belonging. At Hampton, she was the glue behind a close-knit group of friends known as the Friends Forever Crew —a bond formed and sustained largely because of her warmth, energy, and ability to connect people.
She was also a spitfire—resilient, spirited, and not one to be underestimated. Beverly loved to spread love by way of her culinary skills. Her potato salad, greens, and Mary McLeod Bethune sweet potato pies were legendary.
Above all, Beverly was infinitely proud of her only son, Virgil "Trea" Flack, III. His graduation earlier this year, from Harrisburg University of Science and Technology reflected everything she believed in: the power of education, perseverance, and striving for excellence. She shared that message freely with younger generations, always encouraging them to aim high and stay informed.
In early 2025, Beverly moved back to Richmond due to health reasons. She passed away on Sunday, December 14th, peacefully, with family present. She leaves to mourn her loss, her son, Virgil Flack III, Washington, DC; her 'mommy', Mary Gordon West, Richmond, VA; her brothers, Reginald Gordon (Rashida), Richmond, VA; and David Eric Gordon (Rose), Richmond, VA; and a host of loving cousins and friends.
