Obituary

Amy Scruggs Howard was born on March 25, 1965, in Richmond, Virginia, to Virginia L. Scruggs and the late Roy F. Scruggs Jr. She was affectionately known as "Mimi" to her seven beloved grandchildren, who brought endless joy to her life.

A proud graduate of John Marshall High School, Amy went on to earn her Bachelor's degree from Virginia State University in 1988. She was a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, exemplifying sisterhood, service, and scholarship throughout her life.

From a young age, Amy demonstrated a resilient and determined spirit. She accepted Christ at the age of 12 at Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith. Her early dreams of becoming a geologist, paired with a natural talent for mathematics, led her to a distinguished and diverse career. She served at the U.S. Geological Survey, worked as a Geospatial Imaging Specialist (GIS) Engineer for the U.S. Army, taught science at Armstrong High School, contributed to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, and concluded her career as a Grants Manager for the Virginia Department of Veterans Affairs.

Amy's path led her to love and partnership with the charming Vernon D. Howard, Sr., introduced by Ms. Bernadine (Potts) Davis and Mr. Ronald Bradford, 30 years ago. Together, they built a beautiful life and family, celebrating 25 joyful years of marriage. They were devoted to each other and their community, creating a legacy of love, unity, and service.

Ordained as a Deaconess at Good Shepherd Baptist Church in 2013, Amy served faithfully until her health declined. She also took on the role of Church Clerk and Co-Chair of the Scholarship Committee, bringing her organizational talents and spiritual dedication to every task. Her entrepreneurial spirit flourished through her catering business, where she delighted clients with delicious food and warm hospitality. A passionate lover of music, Amy found joy in jazz, soul, and R&B concerts. She was also an avid sports fan. She had a deep love for gardening, a keen interest in politics, a flair for shopping, and a true gift for hosting, always bringing people together with warmth and style. Amy held a special place in the hearts of her nieces and nephews, earning the cherished title of "the best auntie."

Amy leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. She is survived by her devoted husband, Vernon Howard, Sr.; their five children, Vernon Jr. (Samantha), Taylor (Khadijah), Kristin, Zachary, and Nicholas; and her seven treasured grandchildren, Taylor Grace, Avery, Addison, Milo, Lennon, Tiegan, and Thierry. She is also survived by her loving mother, Virginia L. Scruggs; sisters, Dorothy Rashid, Leta Scruggs, and Faith Kimmie Scruggs; brothers, Roy Ford Scruggs III and Terrence Scruggs; cousin, Rosa Chasten (William); and a host of other relatives and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her sister, April G. Everett.

Amy's legacy of compassion, resilience, and grace will continue to inspire all who knew her.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." — 2 Timothy 4:7 (NIV)
