Obituary

Alphonsa Jones aka "Al/Popa Joe" was born March 14, 1945. He resided in Woodford, Virginia. He was born in Nash County North Carolina to the late James Horace Jones and Queen Ester Avent.

He was employed as an oil truck driver with Southern Fuel Oil Company, Massey Wood and West Oil company for 10-15 years. He later drove a taxi cab with Yellow Cab Taxi Service for 8 years. He initially retired later in life as a Yard Forman at Coastal Supply Company in Doswell, Virginia. Alphonsa's education took him as far as the 6th grade in elementary school. At that time he decided at an early age he would rather work with his father and brothers on his father's farm. He also dedicated himself to his mother to do many chores around the house.

Popa Joe's favorite hobbies were playing the lottery, fishing, gardening fresh vegetables, cooking, watching Nascar Races on TV and cheering for his favorite football (Dallas Cowboys) every Sunday. Popa Joe also loved spending time with the youth in his early years. He was a volunteer little league baseball coach for an organization called Richmond Metropolitan Baseball League where he coached his son Calvin and other young boys from the neighborhood. He definitely looked forward to competing against other teams in the Richmond Metropolitan Area.

Another hobby was gardening. Al never hesitated to call friends and family to come get fresh vegetables. Alphonsa also was known for cooking delicious meals on Sunday's. Some of his favorite meals were baked chicken, pork chops and gravy with rice, barbecue spare-ribs, cabbage, collard greens, macaroni-cheese, etc. Popa Joe also loved to bake cakes and pies but the dessert he was well known for was his DELICIOUS PEACH COBBLER. It was always a "must have" at every family function.

Alphonsa was a dedicated family man whom he loved dearly. He will be missed by family, many loved ones and friends which will always cherish great memories and love for Alphonsa "Al/Popa Joe" Jones.
