Deacon Alonzo Winfield Brown, age 90, of Midlothian, VA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. Born on May 1, 1935, in Blackstone, VA, to the late William Edward and Mary Brown.
Alonzo lived a life of purpose and dedication. He attended Public Schools in the Fulton Community, Webster Davis Elementary, and Maggie Walker High School. He married his beloved wife, Rosie Gloria, on November 17, 1956. Alonzo's determination and intelligence served him well in his various pursuits. He worked as a tractor-trailer cargo driver, served in the United States Army, and dedicated over 45 years to serving as a United States Postman.
Alonzo had a commanding presence, marked by his remarkable intellect, expansive memory, and vast knowledge on a wide range of topics, from gospel hymns to finance, plumbing, and electrical wiring. His wisdom and insight inspired and educated those around him.
Alonzo's faith was a cornerstone of his existence. He was a deeply religious man who observed traditional values of faith and duty. His favorite gospel song, "Show Me the Way" (Lord, show me the way), reflected his humble and seeking spirit. As the oldest Deacon at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, he sang in the choir with a memorable deep voice and faithfully stewarded God's blessings, impacting both his life and the lives of others.
Born into modest and simple beginnings, Alonzo rose to prominence through hard work, determination, and a commitment to serving others. His legacy is a testament to perseverance and faith.
Alonzo's love for family, friends, and community was unwavering. He mentored numerous young people, leaving a lasting impact. He is preceded in death by his parents, William Edward and Mary Brown, brother Edward Brown Sr., and nephew Edward Brown Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Rosie Gloria; son LTC (R) Dr. Melvin Washington (Vernice); brother James M. Brown Sr. (Rose); sister-in-law Naomi Griggs; First cousins, Samuel Morgan Jr., Gilbert Morgan (Rev. Evelyn), and Joyce Quarles; nephews James Morgan Brown Jr., Kevin Brown (Vickie), and Samuel Morgan III; nieces, Linda Brown-Burton (Lance), Zina Brown, Rev. Brenda Morgan-Sledge, Sandra Morgan-Cousins, Marie Morgan-Edwards; and many other beloved, family members, and dear friends who were touched by his life.
